Remote Transport Strategy

Remote Transport

People in smaller communities need regular and affordable transport services to get to town.

A Working Future will see:

  • the development of a new integrated transport system to link people to towns
  • reliable transport services and road access
  • better links between remote towns and urban centres.

Integrated Regional Transport Strategy

An Integrated Regional Transport Strategy is currently being developed by the Territory Government to provide options for reliable transport services across all regions of the Northern Territory.

The diverse nature of communities in the Territory means that a mix of road, air and marine transport is required across the regions for the movement of passengers and freight. An integrated approach across all regions will be applied to ensure consistency Territory-wide, whilst ensuring the specific requirements of the regions are addressed.

The Territory Government is acutely aware of the role that transport will play in the implementation of wider social, economic and environmental policies and strategies.

The Integrated Regional Transport Strategy aims to overcome the challenges of providing transport connections between remote communities and major regional service centres. This approach is critical for the social and economic development of the Territory and will assist in the successful implementation of the Territory Government’s Growing the Territory and  A Working Future initiatives under the Territory 2030 program.

Part of the Integrated Regional Transport Strategy will be to deliver a 10-year service delivery model that will target the specific needs and requirements of each region in the Territory.

This will require an inclusive consultation period with stakeholders and regional representatives to identify the issues, expectations and strategies associated with each region to ensure a robust and comprehensive strategy is developed.
