Territory Growth Towns

It is time for our biggest and strategically placed remote communities to become proper towns.

A Working Future will see 20 Indigenous communities transformed over time into Territory Growth Towns that:

  • are properly planned and designed
  • have services, buildings and facilities like any other country town
  • benefit from targeted investment in infrastructure.

Properly planned and designed towns

A proper town has a proper plan. A town plan has land for living, land for shops and offices, land for schools and clinics, land for workshops and warehouses and land for recreation and culture.

Proper planning also involves the community and traditional owners deciding how their town is developed.

Services, buildings and facilities available as in any country town

Territory Growth Towns will provide services to all people living in that region, just like regional centres elsewhere in Australia.

People from the surrounding region will access schools, police stations, courts, health services, aged care and disability facilities, the Internet and good transport options in their regional town.

People will travel to town from outstations and homelands and other towns to go to work, go to school, shop, see friends and see a doctor.

Targeted investment in infrastructure

In order to have services like any other country town, Territory Growth Towns will need proper infrastructure – including water, sewerage, electricity and community facilities.

Our towns will have decent roads that help people to get to work and school. They will also have good Internet access that will attract new businesses and connect our remote towns to anywhere in the world.
